Learn To Swim

Our aim at Sam Riley Swim Schools is to maintain an environment for children to learn-to-swim that is fun, happy, stimulating and encouraging that will keep kids smiling.

At a glance you can see the various levels in our swimming program. Each level is designed to ensure that every child learns and progresses at their own pace.

Through achievable goals set around a consistent program and teaching methods, your child will advance confidently in their swimming. Our program has been designed by Sam Riley in conjunction with industry experts to teach your children how to swim the right way.

Sammy Stars Program

The Sam Riley Swim Schools "Sammy Stars" Program has been designed with a primary focus on water safety and awareness for children from 4 months to 3 years of age.

Within this program we have four different levels:

  • Parent & Baby - 4 to 12 months
  • Parent & Toddler - 12 to 36 months
  • Sammy Stars 1 - ability
  • Sammy Stars 2 - ability
  • Sammy Stars 3 - ability

Our Parent & Baby and Parent & Toddler classes work on similar skills designed to develop each child’s water safety and awareness skills at their own pace. Relaxed submersions, water orientation, breath control, floating and propulsion activities are all developed in a fun, encouraging and stimulating environment.

Kids love a challenge and we should never limit what we teach them because of their age. With this in mind we have established three exciting levels to ensure we continue to challenge every child and ensure a safe environment. Our Sammy Stars 1,2 and 3 classes are designed for children to gain independence in the water while still having heaps of fun. Advanced safety skills, kicking, arms, body position and the all important safety returns (teaching them how to get back to the side of the pool) are all further developed.

Classes are generally held Monday to Friday mornings between 8.30am & 12.00pm and Saturdays from 7.00am - see your swim school for specific times and more information.

Riley Rockets Program

The Sam Riley Swim Schools "Riley Rockets" Program has been designed for children from 3 years of age and above who have had very little experience in the water, lack confidence in and around water, or have the confidence but limited water skills.

Within this program we have two different levels
  • Riley Rockets 1 - max. 3/class
  • Riley Rockets 2 - max. 4/class

In our Riley Rockets 1 classes we provide a gentle, safe and reassuring environment specifically designed to ensure your child is totally relaxed in shallow water. Relaxed submersions, water orientation, breath control, floating and propulsion activities are all developed in a fun, stimulating and encouraging environment.

Once your child has developed these skills they move onto Riley Rockets 2. This level is designed to continue to develop your child’s confidence and water safety skills, as well as introducing them to efficient kicking legs whilst maintaining the correct body position (the correct kicking action and body position is the foundation for our strokes). Children love the fun activities in this level and gain self confidence and personal achievement from being able to propel themselves across the pool.

Classes are held Monday to Friday - mornings & afternoons + Saturday mornings - See your swim school for more information.

Sammy Stylers Program

The Sam Riley Swim Schools "Sammy Stylers" Program has been designed to break the strokes down into a number of smaller, more manageable skills .... like building blocks.

  • Sammy Stylers 1 - max. 5/class
  • Sammy Stylers 2 - max. 6/class
  • Sammy Stylers 3 - max. 6/class
  • Sammy Stylers 4 - max. 6/class

Our structured lesson plans enables your child to progress with their swimming at their own pace. By breaking our levels down into 4 small levels our instructors can spend valuable time with your child guiding and correcting each skill until they have grasped it to the appropriate level.

This encouraging process will continue right through to our Sammy Styler 4 level, and when completed, your children will be swimming all four strokes with maximum efficiency, stroke length and technique - and by the way, we make it FUN along the way.

Next level your child will progress to is: Dolphins 1 - Stroke Correction/Squad levels.

Classes available Monday to Friday afternoons & Saturday mornings - see your nearest swim school for more information.

Dolphin Program

The Sam Riley Swim Schools "Dolphins" Program is designed for children who can swim all four strokes efficiently over 12 metres.

For the first time in Dolphins 1 children will work over 25 metres. A strong focus is maintained on developing all four strokes efficiently, as well introducing correct turns, dives, how to use the pace clock and lane circling. Sessions run for 30 minutes with a maximum of 8 children in each class. Due to the extra distance the children are required to swim, it is highly recommended that they attend a minimum of two, preferably three classes per week.

Once the children have developed their strokes over 25 metres they are ready to start working greater distances. Dolphins 2 classes start to further develop each child’s aerobic capacity by working with sets of laps, whilst continuing to maintain a strong focus on efficiency. Classes run for 45 minutes and have a maximum of 10 children in each class.

Various class times for both these levels are available Monday to Friday afternoons between 3.30 pm and 6.00 pm or Saturday mornings after 8.30 am. See reception for specific day and times available.

Professional School Swimming Program

Gone are the days of school swimming lessons being about 30 kids working in a cold outdoor pool with one teacher. Our professional school swimming program has been modeled on the "Sam Riley Swim Schools Level Progression". With such a wide range of levels found in school swimming programs, each level has been designed to offer each child the skills and techniques required to suit their individual needs.

Small classes conducted by a professional, experienced swimming instructor provide each child with the opportunity to grow and learn in an enjoyable environment at their own pace.

Their progress is continually monitored throughout their time with us and each child receives a certificate at the completion of their lessons outlining the skills they have learnt while with us.

However our Professional Schools Program doesn’t stop there. We have also designed a number of alternative programs that have something for everybody. Water Polo, Royal Life Saving Swim ‘n’ Survive Program, snorkeling course and a course designed to help kids prepare for their school swimming carnival are just some of the other programs we run in our schools program.

All this and we can also organise goggles, bathing caps, etc… to ensure your school makes the most of their limited swimming schedule.

SRSS Swimming without Limits

At Sam Riley Swim Schools, we have designed and developed a new program called Swimming Without Limits for people with a disability. The program has been designed in conjunction with Jenny Schoof from The Friendship Program at Disability Services Queensland. Jenny has been working closely with us to develop, implement and provide the expertise required for this unique program.

Initially it is important to identify the individual needs and abilities of each participant. We will do this through a one on one free assessment. This will be done at a quieter time by an approved SWL instructor (takes approx. 15 minutes) and will enable us to tailor a program that best suits the individual’s needs. During the assessment we will work closely with the person and parent or carer to understand their individual needs and abilities.

Once you have completed the assessment the Program Co-ordinator must identify the type of program that will best suit the individual's needs. This can be done in one of the following ways:

Group classes

SWL 1 - for participants who have little or no water confidence and require individual support (we request that the carer or parent be in the water and take direction from the swimming instructor). Age will have no influence on which class, only ability - maximum of 8 per class.

SWL 2 - People in this inclusive class will have little or no water confidence and require minimal assistance from their parent or carer in the water. Maximum of 4 per class.

SWL 3 - People in this inclusive class will have a good level of water confidence and swimming experience and will work on developing their swimming strokes. No parent is required in the water.  Maximum of 6 per class

SWL 4 - People in this inclusive class will have a basic understanding of the swimming strokes and be very water confident. Maximum of 8 per class.

SWL 5 - This level is for people who require or would like a one on one class. Participants may have special requirements like a focus on muscle stimulation, hydrotherapy, individual stroke development.

SWL 6 - Inclusive swim classes will be offered based on the person's ability and skill level.  Following is an enrolment pack which outlines all costs and asks you some questions (kept strictly confidential) that we will use to ensure we offer you the best service and program possible.

I hope this has provided you with all the information you need about our exciting new program. If you would like to ask any further questions please contact our Swimming Without Limits co-ordinator Rebeccah on 1300 726 745.
